We spend most of our time in our heads - but our most joyful moments in life happen when we are fully present in our bodies.
Movement IS medicine. Still, movement doesn't need to have any goal other than feeling good.
Every body deserves to move.
You don't have to earn the right to move your body (by being the right shape, wearing the right clothes, etc.).
You don't have to take care of everyone else before you can take care of yourself.
Building a joyful self-care practice slowly and creating consistent habits has more impact than making resolutions and attempting big changes quickly.
Every body deserves to dance.
Dance is about community and connection more than performance and competition.
Rhythm and music are even more than art - they are ancient technologies for building community and connection.
Life is short - but we can make the most of it by slowing down and paying attention.
What style of yoga do you teach?
I teach hatha yoga, which is a gentle style of postural yoga. I also incorporate elements of gentle vinyasa flow. I specify gentle because while some vinyasa-flow-style yoga studios demand a rapid progression from pose to pose, we will learn to transition intentionally, in sync with our breath, and in accordance with our bodies’ specific needs at that moment. Ultimately, each moment of our practice will be an exercise in making choices that honor and care for our bodies.
What should I bring to in-person class?
Please bring your own yoga mat. If you like, you can bring your own blocks and strap as well. I will have loaners available of blocks and straps, but not mats. It would be good to bring a water bottle as well.
What should I wear to class?
Please come dressed in comfortable clothing that you can move in. Athletic leggings or sweatpants and a t-shirt is perfect. Most people will choose to practice barefoot, especially for standing poses. Also bring something warm (like a hoodie or sweater, and some socks) to put on during our cool down/deep relaxation.
Masks are not required but are welcome if you are attending in person and feel more comfortable. There will be a good HEPA air filter running during all class times in the AKI Studio and Gallery.
